10 questions to Nicolas Hesslein

Nicolas, there's nothing classic about your career path. What brought you to where you are today?

I’ve always had a strong attraction to all things visual. My work is based on a harmony of colors and shapes, an architectural harmony associated with movement.

Over time, I’ve come to see many things that had a precursory aspect in the way they were proposed. A whole range of elements influenced me: I remember dancers and their movements, an English choreographer in Lausanne who was both sober and so aesthetically pleasing, or a venue with lights and visual installations.

It was all these ingredients of live performance, combined with an artistic novelty, that created this attraction.

When people call on you, what are they looking for? What do you bring to the table?

The people who contact us are looking for that extra grain of creativity that is often lacking today. We can afford to make very wide discrepancies between the disciplines we tackle, to constantly innovate, even while maintaining a permanent guideline.

At what age did you know that light shows would become your profession?

Around 20. My mother is a painter, my father a jazzman. I’ve always been immersed in art and movement. I began by studying psychology, which I completed with a research paper published in the Swiss magazine Psychologie. I could have stayed in this field, gone further. But my mind was already made up

At what point did you realize that digital could be added to the art world?

Not right away. New technologies arrived almost naturally and little by little in our profession, because everything moves and light is essential. In night shows, for example.

How did you acquire all these technical skills?

I took a lot of courses, especially distance learning courses abroad. I’ve trained a lot and I’m still training constantly. But I would add that technical training also comes with experience. Sometimes it can take a long time, you have to test and experiment, because there’s a lot of complexity on the technical side, and things evolve fast.

How do you see your future development?

My development will be artistic, marked by a closer relationship with nature and the environment, as this has long been close to my heart. I also intend to take advantage of the development of artificial intelligence, which offers additional perspectives. Working with 3D, illustration, script and artificial intelligence. It’s a very powerful tool that you have to learn to master, because it’s going to be part of tomorrow’s art. I have a deep-seated desire to increasingly combine live art and digital technology.

Which Lumen project has impressed you the most?

Without a doubt, a reproduction of The Lord of the Rings in Crans-Montana, along the cable car. I had 60 artists in the trees, throwing spears, spinning horses, huts in the woods, acrobatics… Two incredible days!

I also remember a memorable moment at Lausanne Cathedral. I found myself alone at midnight, in this majestic place, with the lighting and video projection to make the final adjustments. It was indescribable.

And then, during Covid, I did a show with aerial acrobatics, 360°, drones, an aerial projection with balloons… I remember it like it was yesterday!

I think our name sums it all up: “LUMEN, manufacture de rêves”. Our aim is to dream with the customer, and then make that dream a reality.

Who can call on Lumen and in what context?

Any person or company organizing an event, a festival, a celebration, the laying of a foundation stone or the inauguration of a building can call on us.

Anyone who wants to highlight something.

I do heritage enhancement, for example. Municipalities, tourist offices, sports organizations, architects, event agencies, but also museums or exhibitions. The range is wide, and our contacts numerous.

In a collaboration, you're contacted, you're chosen... How do you immerse yourself and immerse yourself in the customer's need?

It’s really a co-creation with the customer. We involve our customer. We guide and support them with our technical knowledge, but we need them to give us a thematic impulse. This is essential if we are to identify the customer’s needs and come up with an appropriate response, just as he dreams it, just as he imagines it.
